Dust in the Wind November 29, 2012

A friend of mine told me a story last night, because that’s just what he does (I wish he’d start a blog, you’d love it), he is an amazing story teller. Anyways, here’s how the story basically went. A woman asked her husband to get her a new car, hers was falling apart and unreliable. He said, no we don’t really have the money for that right now. She said okay. She asked him to take a trip to the lake so they could spend the day together. He said no,it’s too far, we’ll do it someday.

The man passed away, and she was very sad. She had him cremated according to his wishes and picked up his ashes. She drove down to the lake with them, got out of the car and said the following. “You know honey, I asked you over and over for a new car to which you always told me there wasn’t enough money. Well we drove here in my new car. I asked you to come to the lake so we could spend time together, you always said it was too far. Isn’t it beautiful here? You know the blow jobs you always asked me for and I always said no? Well I guess it’s a little late now, but here you go.”

Daily Prompt – Advice? I think not! November 28, 2012

Okay don’t go all crazy or anything, but this is my first attempt at completing the Daily Prompt so thank’s for joining me in popping my “daily prompt” cherry. 😉 Anywhoo, here goes nothing.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve given someone that you failed to take yourself?

This question doesn’t exactly apply to me, so let me explain.

It seems as though people trust me with all their deepest, darkest, secrets. Even the people I don’t know. I’m okay with that, I certainly hear a lot of stories and have people ask my opinion often, I rarely provide an opinion outright. It’s just not my place, plus it almost always backfires.

If I have a friend that has some issue and they want advice, my number one priority is to be there to listen. Sometimes that’s enough. If she starts going back in circles or off on tangents (hey it happens) then I try to come up with directed and thoughtful (non leading) questions. Do I have you totally confused yet? Well let me make up an example that is not related to any specific friend or any specific concern…like that caveat huh?

EX: A friend calls and is upset that her boyfriend is out with his friends…again. It was his day off and she thought he’d be working on his honey do list, and had planned to surprise him with supper. She’s certain he’s drunk and he won’t answer her calls or texts. After explaining the situation as she sees it, she says what do I do?

This is where the ALARM goes off in my head! There’s flashing signs saying NO! Don’t answer! DANGER!

So I take a deep breath (to clear the alarm) and say, I’m so sorry you’re upset. What can I do for you? This usually wakes the person up to say, hey, she wants to help me.

Friend: I’m so tired of him not pulling his weight around the house, I have to work too.

Me: I don’t blame you, it can make things stressful when you’re overwhelmed, have you told him that?

Friend: Yes, we just had this fight the other day.

Me: Have you talked with him about your concern when you aren’t arguing?

Friend: No, I don’t think about it then.

Me: What has he done this week that you appreciate or wasn’t expecting for him to do?

Friend: Well he started my car yesterday morning when it was cold. That was really nice.

Me: Did you tell him you appreciated it?

Friend: No, I’m sure he knows.

Me: Maybe you should sit down with him when you guys are having a good day together (soon) and you could thank him for that. Then share with him your stress of feeling as though you have to do it all, and ask him to help you.

Friend: I never thought of it like that.

Okay, so it all seems a little hokey, but I have had conversations like these a million times. We get so wrapped up in our own feelings and emotions we forget to share how we are feeling and what we need with our partner, friend, parent, etc.

Hopefully this makes better sense now that I’ve given an example.

Woohoo, first Daily Prompt…DONE! 🙂 Thanks for joining me on this ride.

The Christmas Gift Idea gone NUTS! November 26, 2012

I am getting my daughter, Kali, a makeup box, and various girly items for Christmas. <SHHHH, it’s a secret, don’t tell her it’s a surprise!!!> She’s 12, so it’s time. I decided that her “big” gift could be a vanity (dressing table), something simple and reasonable. Of course, the more reasonable the price the better. This is what I have in mind.

Isn’t that cute?! Well, it’s just $150, that’s at least $75 more than I wanted to spend. So now the search is on…let’s see what else I can find.

Cute too, but holy smokes $325!

I like it too, but $299 is entirely too much. Well now I know finding a vanity isn’t a problem, but getting my price is. My next idea (yes plan B) is I’ll find a table and make a vanity myself, that should be cheaper. Let’s see what I can find to make that happen. Here are some desks…

Found this at for $39.00

Found this at for $39.84

Found this at for $99

Besides the last one, these are sort of reasonable, but I still have to add a chair of some kind and mirror. It’s been pretty successful at Walmart so let me see what they have for mirrors and chairs/stools.

So if I buy everything separate, it’s still almost $90. I’ll keep shopping, hopefully I’ll come up with something fabulous, but in my price range!

Black Friday Shopping November 24, 2012

I am one of the millions of strange people that love Black Friday shopping. My friends and I head out after our Thanksgiving meal and hours of visiting, with the sales flyers in hand and a basic plan in mind. We aren’t in a rush, we take our time and look around the stores, we make our selections and check out. Not a big deal, we’ve never been involved in a trampling incident or fight or shooting. If we get the deal fine, if not that’s okay too.

The best part of Black Friday shopping for me is people watching. I love to watch people, and not in a creepy I’m stalking you kind of way. For example, while waiting in line at Bass Pro Shops we were chatting along with the people in front of us, they were having a great time socializing with each other. They were obviously sisters and spending quality time together. Of course you have those like the lady behind us in line, who griped at everyone. She had apparently nominated and voted herself as the line monitor. She had already lost sight of the joy of Christmas.

You can see such interesting choices of outfits people shop in, many are dressed in their pajamas so that’s actually not so unusual anymore. Our tradition is to wear a pair of Christmas socks, not that they are easily seen with our blue jeans on. We saw a lady dressed in leggings, a T-shirt, and her fanny pack. She was rockin’ it, you could tell. To each their own.

I know there are people that believe that people shouldn’t go shopping on Black Friday, which now starts on Thursday (Thanksgiving) because it takes workers away from their families. I disagree with that, so many people are happy to have a job right now. Of course they’d rather eat turkey dinner and take a nap instead of going to work, I’d say that’s true for almost everyone. I also know there are a lot of people that don’t have family to celebrate with, maybe they are too far away and can’t travel, or maybe they are an only child and parents have passed away. Holidays can be a very blue time for lots of people, and I’d say some of them are happy to go to work and have something to do. So I’ll keep shopping, and stores will keep opening, and people will keep working. If you don’t agree well then you can choose to stay home and nap after your turkey dinner.

Thankful in 2012 November 22, 2012

This has been an eventful year in so many ways. Through the ups and downs I am very proud of myself and all I’ve learned about me. My divorce was finalized in March, and while emotional and trying I’m certain it was for the best. I’m thankful for the strength to go through with leaving and completing the process, it has left me smarter and stronger. I’m thankful to my ex-husband that we are able to put the majority of our differences and hurt aside to get along and work together for what’s best for our daughter.

I’m so very thankful for my close friends who stood by my side and gave me a shoulder when I needed it, and still do! These are people who are so much more than just friends to me, they are my family. No matter what, they are there, I’ll never forget it and I’m so grateful to each one of them! My blood family were there for me as well, so supportive, but without all the opinions so many family members want to give. They respected my opinions and let me handle things my way.

I’m thankful for my freedom. The freedom to live in a free society, only given to us by the troops that go out every day and do their job. They are away from their families, they make little money, and get even less thanks, but they do it. I appreciate each and every service member out there risking it all for my freedom. I’m also thankful for the freedom from my past. I’ve worked through the issues and am continuing to move forward, I like me much better now. I’m also thankful for choice. I am free to make choices that feel right for me and my daughter. I don’t have to ask permission, I don’t have to consider everyone else’s opinion, I can just do…do what’s right.

And most importantly, I’m thankful for my daughter. She’s the sunshine of my life, and she’s adjusting pretty well to all the changes that have been thrown her way this year. I’m proud of the young lady she’s becoming, and I love the relationship we have together. We have a great time, but I’m still Mom. At least I’m finally a Mom that can make her own decisions, and stand by them! That’s something great to be able to teach your daughter.

Me and Kali just being silly

It’s a Brand New Day! November 15, 2012

I have tried to write a blog for years, which is not exactly the truth, I start it and then lose interest. Well enough of that, it’s time to have some fun! Buckle up for the randomness. 🙂 So let’s get started. Tonight I catered for our Annual Fair Board Appreciation Dinner. “What is that?”, you say.

The Wilson County Fair (Tennessee) is made up almost completely of volunteers, around 800 of us last I heard. We work together to make a fun, safe, and even educational event for our community. Check out the website Wilson County Fair and you can see all the things to do during those 9 days.

So with that being said, the Fair Executive Board, gives the volunteers a thank you dinner, last night’s was complete with games and giveaways. The catering part, that’s actually one of my part time jobs. Jordan’s Catering is fabulous and even greater to work for!

Now, on to the point, I got a ticket for the drawing for prizes. Even though I was catering, I am still a volunteer, so good luck to me!

Everyone went through the line, enjoyed a little show from the DooWop’s, listened to different speakers, played a game, etc. NOW, it’s time for the drawing! I go over to listen for my number…they draw for lottery tickets, not me. Molasses, not me. Honey, not me. Beautiful one of a kind piece of pottery…still not me. Then Hale (President) announces they have 2 sets of two Titans tickets. Draw the first one, not me, BUT the second one IS MY NUMBER! YEAH! I’m so excited!

Wait a minute, I don’t like professional football, and I really, really, really don’t like heights. Hmm, I’ll sell them that’s a good idea! I start working on that, and my friend says well you know, Kali (my daughter) would LOVE to go. You should take her. Oh. Well yeah, that’s a good idea. Even though I’m not a fan of professional football, I LOVE spending time with Kali. So it looks like Kali and I are going to be going to the Titans game next month! I’ll let you know how it goes.
